La mañana del 14 de mayo de 2008, agentes del Ministerio de Inteligencia de la República Islámica de Irán arrestaron sin motivos reales a 6 de los miembros del Yarán, el órgano que coordinaba los asuntos básicos de la comunidad bahá’í de este país. El séptimo miembro de este órgano había sido arrestado un mes antes, el 5 de marzo. En el momento de su arresto, ninguno de sus derechos básicos fue respetado. Sus familiares ni si quiera conocieron su paradero hasta meses más tarde. Tampoco han tenido hasta la fecha acceso a su abogada, la laureada con el Premio Nobel de la Paz, Shirín Ebadí.
No fue hasta 7 meses después de su arresto que se hicieron públicas las acusaciones a las que se enfrentaban: ‘espionaje para Israel, insulto a las santidades religiosas y propaganda en contra de la Republica Islámica.’ Tres meses después de que la supuesta investigación había terminado, se agregó una cuarta acusación: ‘propagación de la corrupción en la tierra.’ Varias de estas acusaciones suponen en Irán la pena de muerte.
De sobra está decir que estas acusaciones no tienen fundamentos reales, y son falsas, con el único objetivo de deslegitimizar a los bahá’ís y hacerles daño.
En tan sólo unos pocos días, hubo muchas reacciones internacionales por parte de distintos gobiernos, líderes parlamentarios y organizaciones de derechos humanos. Expresando fuertes críticas contra el juicio y las falsas acusaciones, y exigiendo la liberación, o al menos un juicio justo y el acceso a su abogada a los 7 líderes bahá’ís arrestados.
Finalmente, hace tan sólo unos días, llegó información procedente de las autoridades de la prisión de Evin (donde están retenidos los 7 Yarán) que revelaba que el juicio tendría finalmente lugar el próximo 11 de julio de 2009, catorce meses después de su repentino encarcelamiento.

On 14 May 2008 agents of the Ministry of Intelligence of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrested 6 members of the Yaran without charge. The Yaran was a group of Baha'is which tended to the basic needs of the Iranian Baha'i community. The 7th member of the Yaran had been arrested on 5 March 2008. When detained, none of their basic rights were respected. Their relatives have had no news of their whereabouts for months. So far they have not been allowed to meet their lawyer, the Nobel Peace prize laureate, Shirin Ebadi.
Seven months after their arrest the charges brought against them were released: "espionage for Israel, insulting religious sanctities and propaganda against the Islamic Republic". Three months after the alleged investigation was completed a fourth charge was added to the other three: "spreading corruption on earth". Some of these charges could attract the death penalty.
Needless to say, those accusations are utterly baseless and only seek to demonize and inflict further harm on the Baha'is.
International reaction to news that the seven Yaran would be tried came swiftly as governments, parliamentary leaders and human rights organizations strongly criticised the trial as well as the charges brought against the Baha'is. They all have called on the Iranian government to release them or at least, to grant them a fair trial and to allow them to meet Shirin Ebadi.
Eventually, just a few days ago, information was conveyed by the authorities in Evin prison (where the 7 Baha'is are held) to the relatives of the Yaran pointing out that the trial would reportedly take place on 11 July, fourteen months after their arrest.
